Etymology of the continents


EUROPE
Traditionally the origin of the name Europe is associated with a mythological character. Indeed, Europe (Ευρώπη in Greek) was the daughter of Agenor and Telephassa, sister of Cadmus a Phoenician princess.

AFRICA
The origin of the name "Africa" ​​is also unclear. The word may come from the Greek composed of a = no and rhrigos = cold, ie "without cold." Another possibility is the word "aphros" which in Greek means "foam". It is possible that the etymology of Africa is something like "where the foaming sea."
ASIA
The word "Asia" comes from the Greek 'Ασία "and is attributed to Herodotus to refer to Anatolia and then for the medical wars to refer to the lands of the Persian empire.
AMERICA
Of all the continents, the origin of the name America is the best known, named after Amerigo Vespucci. Though it was Christopher Columbus who discovered America, it was not Amerigo Vespucci, a Florentine origin a boater who realized that actually this land to a new continent corresponded.
OCEANIA
Its origin comes from the word "Oceania" from Greek mythology. Oceania (Oceanidas and Oceanides) refers to protective nymphs of the streams, springs ... and had the meaning of "daughters of Ocean".
ANTARTIDA
The origin of the name "Antarctica" has its origin in the Greek word αρκτικως ("arktikos"), which translates as "the bear" in reference to the Polar Bear pointing the North Pole. The opposite of this ανταρκτικως word ("antarktikos"), meaning "opposite to the bear" will name this continete.
